Brazilian Residency Through Investment

The VITEM IX Startup Investor Pathway

Invest in Brazil’s innovation economy and obtain long-term residency—without the need to relocate full-time. The VITEM IX visa allows foreign entrepreneurs and investors to obtain Brazilian residency by investing in or creating an innovative business in Brazil. Once approved and registered, you receive a Brazilian resident ID (CRNM) and the ability to live, operate, and stay connected to Brazil long-term.

Stay Connected for the Long Term

Brazil’s investor residency is designed for people who want optionality.
After your visa is approved and you register in Brazil, you receive your CRNM (Brazil’s foreign resident ID). This gives you practical access to Brazil’s financial and legal system—allowing you to open accounts, operate businesses, and sign contracts as a resident.

You are not required to live in Brazil year-round. Instead, the program is structured for long-term connection rather than immediate relocation.

What happens after the initial period

One of the most misunderstood aspects of the VITEM IX pathway is the role of the three-year mark. From the moment you register in Brazil, you hold resident status. The three-year milestone is not about “becoming permanent,” but about verification.

At that point, the Brazilian authorities review whether the qualifying investment was properly maintained and complied with. Once verified, your residency documentation can be renewed on an ongoing basis, and the original investment may be restructured or withdrawn, subject to applicable rules.

This is why the way the investment is set up—and documented—matters from day one.

A long-term option,
not a shortcut

Some residents later explore Brazilian citizenship. Naturalization in Brazil follows general national rules and depends largely on physical presence and personal circumstances. There is no special “investor fast track.”

Our role is to help you obtain and maintain lawful, stable residency. Citizenship decisions come later, and only if they make sense for you.

Two ways to qualify under
the innovation track

The VITEM IX innovation pathway is built around economic contribution, not passive investment. Most of our clients qualify through one of two routes:

Investing in an existing Brazilian startup aligned with innovation and value creation

Creating their own innovative business in Brazil with an approvable plan

works in practice

Step 1

Strategy before paperwork

Every case starts with a consultation. We assess your goals, profile, and risk factors, then determine whether VITEM IX is the right path—and which version of it actually works for you.

Step 2

Structuring the investment

Whether investing in a startup or building your own company, this is where most complexity lives. Banking, compliance, and documentation must be coordinated carefully to avoid delays later.

Step 3

Government and consular review

Once the structure is in place, the application moves through government and consular channels. Timelines vary, and requests for additional information are common.

Step 4

Entry and registration in Brazil

After approval, you enter Brazil, register with the Federal Police, and receive your CRNM—formally establishing your resident status.

Why Brazil, Realistically

Brazil is not a speculative residency play. It is a large, complex country with real bureaucracy—and real opportunity. For those willing to navigate it properly, it offers:

A globally significant economy with deep innovation ecosystems

Residency rules that favor long-term connection over constant presence

A strategic position for people building multi-country lives

We built StartBrazil because we went through this process ourselves—and learned where theory and reality diverge.

Support at the level
you need

Some clients only need legal filing support. Others want full execution—from investment to banking to compliance planning.

We offer modular services that scale with your needs:

Consultation & strategy

Visa and legal filing

Investment setup and execution

Founder support for building a Brazilian company

Ongoing compliance and residency maintenance

We built StartBrazil because we went through this process ourselves—and learned where theory and reality diverge.
